 Saratoga Calendar 2017

This year’s summer racing series will run from 21st July–3rd September 2017. Travers Stakes, Whitney Stakes and Woodward are three highlights of the Saratoga race schedule.

Travers Stakes

The renowned highlight of the summer racing season at Saratoga, Travers Stakes is often referred to as The Mid-Summer Derby. Travers Stakes is the third-ranked race for American horses at three years of age, behind the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes. Dating back to 1864, the race was named in honour of William Travers, the president of the old Saratoga Racing Association.

The 2016 winner of Travers Stakes was Arrogate (Juddmonte Farms, Inc.), with a time of 1:59.36. This year, Travers Stakes will take place on 26th August  2017, with the stake of $1,250,000 drawing crowds from across the United States.

Whitney Stakes

Another highlight of the races, the Whitney Stakes, sometimes referred to as the Whitney Handicap, is named after the Whitney family, a prominent family in thoroughbred horse racing.

First run in 1928, the Whitney Stakes was originally 1 ¼ miles but from 1955 it was shortened to the current distance of 1 ⅛ miles. In 2016, Frosted (Godolphin Racing LLC) won the Whitney in a time of 1:47.77. Whitney will take place on 5th August 2017 with an impressive stake of $1,200,000 on offer.

Woodward

Woodward is one of the premier races for older thoroughbred horses in the United States, with a race division of three years and over. The race was named in memory of the prominent racehorse owner, William Woodward, who was chairman of the Jockey Club from 1930 to 1950.

Taking place in September, Woodward is the final Grade 1 race of the 2017 calendar. One of America’s most prestigious races, Woodward has been won by many horses who have been named as the American Horse of the Year. In 2009 at age three, Rachel Alexandra became the first female to win Woodward. Last year, Shaman Ghost (Stronach Stables) won the race in a time of 1:48.92. Woodward will take place on 2nd September 2017 with a stake of $750,000 up for grabs.
