The Soaring Softly tops the Preakness Day card at Belmont Park
By New York Hot List Staff
The Preakness Day feature at Belmont Park on Saturday is the $100,000 Soaring Softly (G3) which is to be run at seven-furlongs on the outer Widener Turf Course. In the eight-horse field, the 5-2 morning line favorite Stillwater Cove will face a stout challenge from the 3-1 second choice Feel Glorious.
The Soaring Softly is named for the 1999 Champion Female Turf Horse who won several important grass races on the New York tracks. Trained by Jimmy Toner she compiled a career record of 16: 9-1-3 with earnings of $1,270,433. She finished her championship year as a 4-year-old with a victory in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf.
As a 2-year-old Stillwater Cove was a debut winner for Wesley Ward who then took Quality Road filly to run at the Royal Ascot meeting. Back in the States, she won the Bolton Landing at Saratoga and then ended her year in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint. After a winter break, she returned to run second at Keeneland.
Feel Glorious looks to stay unbeaten since coming to America from racing in Europe. The Christophe Clement trainee will cut back in distance in the Soaring Softly.
“I liked her efforts very much,” Clement said. “She’s training well. I liked the two starts. She’s training at Belmont Park and I wanted to see how she does in New York in a graded stakes. Seven-eighths shouldn’t be a problem. She has very high cruising speed. The distance should be fine.”
It is not often that the Chad Brown horse in a turf stakes is listed at 8-1 on the morning line as is the case with Seek and Destroy. Purchased for $425,000 by e Five Racing, the owners of turf stars New Money Honey and Rushing Fall, Seek and Destroy was entered for the grass in all four of her starts, but only once did the race stay on the turf. She won her final two starts last year including a stakes race on the turf. Now she returns with a chance to race on the grass again.
The Soaring Softly is carded as Race 11 on Saturday’s 12-race card, with an approximate post time of 5:26 p.m ET. First post for the Belmont Park card is noon.
