The Franklin Square kicks off the NYRA Cross-Country Pick 5
By Matt Shifman
The $100,000 Franklin Square, which drew a very competitive field of six 3-year-olds fillies, kicks off Saturday’s NYRA and Oaklawn Park Cross-Country Pick 5. Four out of the six runners will enter the gate with a victory in their most recent start and two of them have perfect records in their two career starts.
To no surprise the two unbeaten fillies are the favorites. Stonesintheroad [2-1] won both of her races for Jeremiah Englehart while running on the lead. Her Aqueduct debut came in December in a race where the third-place finisher came back to win and then she had an impressive four-length victory against winners.
Forgotten Hero [8-5] will clash with Stonesintheroad. She broke her maiden in November by more than five-lengths and the came back to win a stakes race in December in the New York Stallion Series over the very fast and talented Sassy Agnes. Since then trainer John Toscano has given her a brief freshening.
“She’s very quick and has a real good second-quarter [mile time], which is her forte,” said Toscano. “Hopefully, that’ll be to our advantage on Saturday. Every time I’ve worked her, she’s been blacktype [caliber]. She has a lot of talent. She’s maturing, and as she does, we’re just hoping she gets better and better.”
The six-furlong distance is ideal for both of these fast frontrunning fillies, but something has to give when they meet in the Franklin Square.
“Right now, that’s her style, and we won’t change anything until she shows us something needs to be changed,” Toscano said.
All of the Pick 5 action will be shown on FOX Sports Saturday At The Races, airing 4-6:30 p.m. ET on FS2.
