Two talented New York Hot List horses run on Saturday

April 3, 2020 // By New York Hot List Staff

Racing at Aqueduct has been shut down since March 15, but two talented New York Hot List horses will be in action on Saturday. Maryanorginger returns to the races at Oaklawn Park while Sonneman will hit the track at Gulfstream Park.

Maryanorginger earned a Hot List “A” rating based on her debut victory in the Astoria Stakes at Belmont Park in June. She overcame a troubled trip where she stumbled badly and then had to check while winning at only 5 ½ furlongs. Originally, the daughter of Strong Mandate sold for $25,000 as a weanling and then brought $190,000 as a yearling. She will be the only 3-year-old in a full field of older horses going six furlongs.

With the new September Kentucky Derby date, Sonneman gets a chance to see if he belongs on the Derby trail. He got a Hot List “C” when he broke his maiden at Belmont Park in his third career start going a one-turn mile after taking late action at the windows. The runner-up in that race cameback to win his next start. The $375,000 yearling purchase is out of a graded stakes winning mare who won going long. He’ll face winners for the first time going seven-furlongs in an allowance race.

Here is the New York Hot List analysis for those two races. Good luck, if you are playing.

Oaklawn Park – race 7 – 5:06 pm ET

(3) Maryanorginger (A) made her debut in this stakes race for Jeremiah Englehart and was bet to odds of 3-1. She stumbled badly from the gate and then had to check while trying to make up ground inside. Still, she rallied beginning on the turn to win the race by half of a length. (9) Cardamon returns after running third in a Churchill Downs allowance back in November. He was a rare Bill Mott first-time maiden winner going seven furlongs back in September. (7) Portal Creek is high on experience with five wins in 18 career starts with a recent third in a first-level allowance similar to this spot. (2) Inthemidstofbiz will stalk the early pace once again and frequently hits the board.

Gulfstream Park – race 11 – 5:52 pm ET

(4) Sonneman (C) was a bit overlooked in his third start while getting bet down from 6-1 to 4-1 after racing to a place finish in his second try in a maiden special weight at Saratoga. The added distance to a mile at Belmont helped as he rallied in the final furlong to get the lead with a sixteenth to go and then won by a half-length. Trainer Mark Hennig has put a long series of works into the son of Curlin to prepare for his comeback from that October victory. (3) I’ll Fight Dempsey was a debut winner for Todd Pletcher at Gulfstream at the end of February when he won on the front end as the 2-1 favorite going six furlongs in a field of 10. (8) Acre makes his 2020 debut after last being seen breaking his maiden at Saratoga while rallying to win a seven-furlong sprint by more than three lengths. The son of Blame gets Lasix for the first-time for trainer Bill Mott. (7) Masterday tried the Derby trail last time in the Fountain of Youth (G2). The race before he was second in an allowance behind Ny Traffic. He was a first-time maiden winner.
