Belmont Stakes winner is entered in Saturday’s Jazil at Aqueduct

January 24, 2020

The 2020 Belmont Stakes winner Sir Winston is entered to make his return to New York racing in the $100,000 mile and an eighth Jazil at Aqueduct on Saturday.

Sir Winston, who is listed as the 5-2 second choice on the morning line, shipped to New York after running a troubled twelfth at the Fair Grounds Race Course in his first race back since winning at Belmont Park. While preparing for the Jazil, the Mark Casse runner lost his left front shoe and as a result was experiencing some tenderness in the hoof and was switched to using glue-on shoes on both front feet.

“We’re entering pretty far out, so as long as he trains well the rest of the week, we’ll run. We added glue-on shoes and those have seemed to help him,” Casse said.

Ultimately, Sir Winston is being prepared for a start in the Dubai World Cup on March 28 at Meydan Racecourse.

“Right now we’re trying to make the Dubai World Cup, but he likes New York and likes to run long,” Casse said.

With or without the Belmont Stakes winner, the favorite in the Jazil is likely to Mr. Buff. The John Kimmel trainee is the winner of eight of his last 12 starts. His 12 career victories include six wins at Aqueduct and eight at the nine-furlong distance. Amongst the first-place finishes is the 2019 Jazil where he defeated Sunny Ridge.

At 3-1, Stan the Man is the third choice on the morning line based on his neck victory in the Queens County on Dec. 21, which came after a layoff from June for trainer John Terranova.

“We had him as ready. Ideally, off the layoff, we weren’t looking at a mile-and-an-eighth but there wasn’t much else out there for him,” Terranova said. “We knew he needed the race, but it was a good one. He got a little tired late in the race and came out of it really well. Since then, he’s been forward.”

The Jazil, which drew a field of eight, is slated as race 8 out of 9 with post time scheduled for 3:55pm ET.
